              ABOUT ME

                            Michael Nomina, LCSW, ACSW, DCSW

Licensure, Certification, Education:

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers.  I also have certification with the National Association of Social Workers, including certificates in the Academy of Clinical Social Workers and as a Diplomate in Clinical Social Work.  I received my Master of Social Work degree from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon, with majors in philosophy and psychology.

Experience:

For more than 30 years I have worked with adults that experience psychosis, depression, anxiety and changes to life associated with aging.  The settings I have worked in include providing community based intensive case management services to adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses, providing clinic-based outpatient mental health counseling, work as geriatric social worker in a mental health care facility, and work on mobile crisis services team.

I have also supervised, managed and worked as a clinical director overseeing outpatient programs for older adults, enhanced care facilities, residential treatment facilities, supported housing, transitional housing for adults involved in forensic services, as well as oversight of counseling and case management services in a variety of residential programs.

In addition to these practice areas, I have provided regular consultation to mental health treatment teams in their work with clients.  I also provide clinical supervision to social workers and counselors working on professional licensure.

Therapeutic Approaches:

Therapy is a collaborative work that considers the life experiences, patterns, relationships, and beliefs that have shaped and currently influence your ways of being in the world. I am committed to identifying and exploring challenges that currently bring you to therapy and the innate strengths and resources that will allow you to make the changes you desire. I am committed to providing a safe and accepting therapeutic environment that facilitates growth, insight, and change. I am trained in several treatment approaches that include Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Problem Solving Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

Therapy has both benefits and risks. During the course of therapy, you might notice changes in your symptoms, problems, and functioning. Treatment typically produces benefits over time but may challenge your equilibrium as we explore areas of vulnerability in addressing your mental health concerns. However, as you commit yourself to work through your vulnerable issues and build upon your strengths, it is likely that you will see improvements throughout our work together and in the future.
